According to foreign media reports, on August 31, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that Ford will recall 90,736 vehicles in the United States because the vehicle’s engine intake valves may rupture while driving.

The recall affects certain 2021-2022 Bronco, F-150, Edge, Explorer, Lincoln Nautilus and Lincoln Aviator models equipped with the 2.7L or 3.0L Nano EcoBoost engine, NHTSA said.

NHTSA also said that as part of the remedy, Ford dealers will conduct engine cycle tests and, if necessary, replace the engines at no cost to the owners involved.

In June, Ford was one of the biggest brand risers in the 2024 J.D. Power U.S. New Vehicle Quality Study rankings, jumping 14 spots to No. 9; the Ford Bronco Sport was named Best Compact SUV; and the Lincoln brand also achieved a rise in the rankings by continuing to improve quality.

John Lawler, Ford’s vice chairman and chief financial officer, said at the time, “Our internal measurements likewise show that the company is continually improving the quality of its products. The aftermarket 90-day 1,000-vehicle failure rate has declined significantly.”

New product launches and the aftermarket 90-day 1,000-vehicle failure rate are said to be one of the key metrics for warranty costs, and improved product quality can also have a positive impact on overall financial reporting.

Lawler added, “We still have a lot of work to do to improve quality and reduce cost and complexity. But the team is confident that we are moving in the right direction.”

Also in August, Ford is recalling more than 90,000 Explorer police cars in North America due to a vehicle engine malfunction that could increase the risk of engine fires, according to a foreign media report. The recall involves 2020 through 2022 model year Ford Explorer large police crossovers. The affected vehicles are equipped with the Police Interceptor Utility Package and 3.3-liter hybrid and gasoline engines.
