We learned a few days ago that the Canadian government of Justin Trudeau is preparing to impose new tariffs on electric vehicles made in China to “align Canada” with the actions taken by the United States and the European Union. However, the report said that Trudeau took cautious action because of concerns about China’s “retaliation.”
Canada currently imposes a 6% tariff on electric vehicles made in China, and the purchase of these cars is eligible for a federal electric vehicle rebate of up to $5,000. However, due to Canada’s relatively cold geographical location, its development of new energy vehicles is relatively slow. In 2023, only 11% of new cars registered in Canada are pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
