According to foreign media reports, in February, as hybrid cars boosted international market demand, South Korea’s automobile exports soared to an all-time high. The South Korean auto industry has shown extraordinary resilience as the United States introduces worrisome tariffs, with its output and domestic sales also rising significantly.

According to the latest report from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Resources of South Korea, in February, South Korea’s automobile production increased by 17.1% year-on-year to 352,000 vehicles, the first time that the monthly production of South Korea’s automobiles exceeded 350,000 vehicles in more than a decade. Domestic sales and export volumes have also achieved significant double-digit growth.

Exports alone reached 233,000 vehicles, an increase of 17.3% compared with February last year. The total automobile exports reached US$6.07 billion, a year-on-year increase of 17.8%, setting a record high.

Analysts believe that the boom in South Korea is largely attributed to hybrid vehicles. South Korea’s hybrid vehicle exports rose sharply by 61.7% in February. The growing demand for environmentally friendly cars from global consumers has driven sales of hybrid vehicles.

The domestic market in South Korea also showed good development prospects, with car sales rising 14.8% in February to 133,000 units.

The increase is driven by measures taken by the South Korean government to promote car sales, including temporary reduction of personal consumption tax on passenger cars. In addition, South Korea’s subsidies for electric vehicles have also promoted electric vehicle sales, with South Korea’s electric vehicle sales soaring 298.1% in February to 14,000 units.

However, behind these impressive data, there is also a warning about potential tariffs. Analysts are concerned that such measures could impact the future performance of the auto industry, given the warning that U.S. President Trump may impose tariffs on imported cars. Although the South Korean auto industry has achieved strong growth, the implementation of potential U.S. tariff policies may offset these results, so it is imperative to formulate strategic plans.

Industry experts warn that the South Korean auto industry must remain vigilant and proactive in dealing with potential trade impacts. The South Korean Ministry of Industry plans to conduct a comprehensive review of the situation and collect opinions from industry participants through a task force dedicated to dealing with cooperation with the United States on automotive trade.

With the changing global trade environment, the coming months are crucial for stakeholders to develop strategies on how to maintain growth momentum.
